With that caveat in mind, I have to say that I thought this a beautiful collection of poems. It tells the story of a romance from a whole variety of different and unusual angles.

We hear about the individual attraction but more about the development of life together - little things like co Ask. We hear about the individual attraction but more about the development of life together - little things like cooking, shopping, gardening, slowly unfold the life-long story of a couple.

The sentiment is never syrupy, but always sweet - it touches on hard moments and quiet reflection, busy times and disputes. The language use is eclectic and often the unexpected word is found rather than the expected, keeping the work as fresh and crisp as the salad course of a meal. And this is indeed a main meal and not a side-dish as poetry so typically can be. The verse is often blank and often abandons both rhyme and scansion in favour of its own patterns. Occasionally this does fail and leaves part of a poem slightly bent out of shape, but this is rare.

My favourite is definitely 'Ensorcelled' in which the poetry seems to waltz across the page, whilst painting a mural upon the wall of understanding that the book slowly builds up in the mind of the reader. Whilst I can not speak of how technically proficient - or otherwise - this poetry might be, I loved it.

I can whole heartedly recommend this book of poems to all who love poetry that speaks, without sophistry, but is not unsophisticated and gives real insight into the life of a couple over time. Truly romantic! View 1 comment. Dec 12, Stuart Aken rated it really liked it Shelves: poetry. Poetry is more difficult to review than novels or nonfiction. For me it is, anyway. As a writer of prose, often puzzled by the brevity and density of poetry, I feel less qualified to comment on technical aspects. What I can do, however, is describe how the poems made me feel, what I experienced as I read, what I got out of the collection.

These are expressions of love, descriptions of lov Poetry is more difficult to review than novels or nonfiction. These are expressions of love, descriptions of love, explorations of love, depictions of love. Love, you note, not sex. But this is subtle and wraps passion in gentle images.

Against The Night: Love Poems

Mostly, this is love. Love as I recognise it as a man married to a woman I love.

These poems sing of admiration, affection, shared experience, intimate moments, challenges faced together, and the growing love that comes with a shared route to maturity. The use of metaphor is, at times, exquisite. And so many images tumble before the reader as stanzas unfold. It is possible to become lost in the world fashioned by the poet here. There will be those, mostly men, but including the women who relish their resistance to all things romantic, who fail to enter this world and perhaps dismiss it as soft-hearted or unworthy of their attention.

The loss is theirs. Those who love or have loved in the true sense of that all-encompassing emotion will enjoy these verses. Some are surprisingly intimate for a public collection, though none is out of place here. But, in fact, I enjoyed the whole collection. May 21, Mona Soorma added it.

Against The Night: Love Poems is a book of love poems that the author has written to his wife Sandra. The beauty of that dedication was the first thing that struck me, as did the very descriptive cover… looking out into the night together is what true love stands for.

The book itself is captivating, right from the word go.

The introductory poem immediately tells you what is special about the book, these are love poems with a difference. They are not too mushy, they talk of real life, of battling Against The Night: Love Poems is a book of love poems that the author has written to his wife Sandra. What I love about the book is the unexpectedness, every page you turn brings something new.

There is a sharp edge to the poems that somehow gives strength to the feelings of love, a little like a bit of sugar makes the hot food hotter! What I also love is the blend of nature, the sky and the stars and the whole universe with the mundane, the everyday situations, the rough and tumble of life.

If anything, I think the writer could work a bit on their pacing and clear up a few rough edges, but the story is there and w Trollen rose was a great read. If anything, I think the writer could work a bit on their pacing and clear up a few rough edges, but the story is there and when it shines through it shines well. It is populated by several species - humans, orcen, trollen males and females kept separated although A number of other things are not clear, particularly what motivates the various parties.

Nine Artifacts are mentioned, but I am certain I enjoyed reading this fantasy story. Nine Artifacts are mentioned, but I am certain only about two of them. There appears also to be a parallel world or universe, but it is not clear to this reader if the author has determined how the characters might cross from one to the other. It seems that only the main character does and that is perhaps due to the Artifact that he carries. On the other hand, it is clear he has no control over that Artifact or its presence.

He is a practitioner of "shi," something akin to "the force. The fight scenes have an air of inevitability to them.

It is not clear, for instance, why there are "some guards with amethyst-encrusted spears. One applauds the attack on slave trade and in general readers will sympathize with the sentiment that "only the care of larger forces may protect us Something in the exposition seems to be lacking. The MC has an accomplice actually several, but this one is special , the product of inter-species breeding. She seems actually to be unique, but nothing is made of this so perhaps it is best not to notice. Her motives are somewhat weak; something along the lines of well I took some courses in that so I should be the one to do this.

Only "this" means to wield the Rose--the power to rule the world. And how is she attracted to the MC? Because "he had manners, even under torture in the dungeon, he had treated her with courtesy and respect. Despite all this, I was charmed by the story and wanted to read on. The author must have done something right. There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
